Collagen
The most important building block in the repair and building of tissue is the protein called collagen. Collagen is more than one third of the protein in the body. Within the skin, collagen accounts for 75% of the material in the skin, and is what gives the skin its elasticity. Collagen is also found in tendons, ligaments, joints, arteries, hair and nails. It is a flexible, fibrous material with twice the tensile strength of steel, which forms a kind of "scaffolding" which supports the cells of all the organs of the body.
Collagen actually helps form the structure of your body, down to the shape of specific cells and the differentiation from other types of cells. It is like having workers on a scaffold building a wall, with different style doors and windows forming parts of the wall.
